How can AI assist us effectively?

The 2025 Summer School focused on how artificial intelligence can aid students. This encompassed its application in lectures, lab practicals, and the execution of scientific projects within research institutes.

From Technical Basics to Practical Application

The application of artificial intelligence is set to have far-reaching impacts across numerous professional and personal fields. This also affects students’ education of students. Consequently, the fundamentals and practical applications of AI were the central focus of this year’s Summer School for the Elite Graduate Program “Biomedical Neuroscience”, held from September 15th to the 18th at Schliersbergalm.

To ensure all participants started with the same foundational knowledge, the event began with a lecture on the technical basics of AI delivered by Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Berger. Another invited speaker, PD Dr. Daniel Mertens from the University of Ulm, provided an overview of the current applications of AI in neuroscience.

With this information in hand, the students worked in groups over two days to explore various topics. These included the use of AI in university teaching, planning and executing research proposals and projects, and conducting information searches on specific subjects. After completing their group work, the students presented their findings, which were then discussed collectively in a roundtable format. Alongside the academic program, the Summer School included a hike along Lake Schliersee with a swimming break, fostering a relaxed environment for networking and informal exchange.
