Italian Journey

Students of the Elite Graduate Program “Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering” (BGCE) attend regularly the interdisciplinary courses of the Ferienakademie. This summer school takes place in South Tyrol, Italy, and is organized by the Technical University of Munich, the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, and the University of Stuttgart. Ferienakademie’s course program, in particular the courses that deal with computational simulations, fits perfectly to the interdisciplinary education in BGCE.

Concept of the Ferienakademie

Ferienakademie has been offering courses since 1984. The concept is similar to the summer academies of the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes and represents a combination of leisure and study time: Excellent and motivated students shall encounter interesting research topics and have the opportunity for intensive contact to peers, professors and research assistants beyond the limit of their own curriculum or university. Sarntal, a small valley north of Bolzano in South Tyrol in Italy, represents a loyal host for Ferienakademie and offers perfect conditions. Ferienakademie'sestablished leisure time program consists of hiking (of course!), tournaments in table tennis and chess, and the run around lake Durnholz.

One Highlight Chases the Next

Highlight 1: Participants of the Ferienakademie come from universities of three different locations: Munich, Erlangen/Nuremberg, and Stuttgart. This mixture makes courses at Ferienakademie unique and, thus, fosters different views on scientific problems. The students of the “Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering” are familiar with this aspect to some extent due to the cross-university design of their curriculum in Erlangen and Munich.

Highlight 2: Another facet of Ferienakademie fits perfectly to the design of the Elite Graduate Program „Bavarian Graduate School of Computational Engineering“ : a living form of interdisciplinarity. Each year, the ten to twelve courses of Ferienakademie are accommodated in five hotels in Sarntal. The resulting mix of courses with different topics and participants within one hotel leads to a widening of horizons in many aspects. Background information on topics and scientific fields are disseminated in discussions during, e.g., meals or hiking. This frequently results in long-lasting contacts across the borders of disciplines and beyond the actual Ferienakademie stay.

Experiences in 2018

Each year, three courses at Ferienakademie tackle topics and challenges related to computational simulation of physics or engineering problems. In 2018, the following courses took place:

  • course 4: Multiscale Problems in Mechanics: Models – Simulation – Application
  • course 5: Simulation of Fluids and Wave Phenomena – High Order, High Performance, High Productivity
  • course 6: Accelerating Physics Simulations with Deep Learning

BGCE students participated primarily but not only in these courses. In the last years, students reported on great experiences in courses that provided a project phase. In such a project phase, students in 2018’s course 5 simulated the Tohoku tsunami of 2011 which was partly responsible for the Fukushima incident in Japan.

In 2019, there will again be an interesting program at Ferienakademie. The organizers and lecturers are looking forward to meeting interesting and motivated participants in autumn.
