Photo- and Electrochemistry Conference in Beilngries – “Fascinating Chemistry in a Beautiful Castle”

The 3rd meeting of the International Doctorate Program Photo-Electro Catalysis reunited the PhD stu-dents from the University of Regensburg and the Technical University of Munich at Schloss Hirschberg, Beilngries. Putting the accent on the collaborative projects between the research groups, this two-day meeting proved to be very enriching and convivial.

A Great Venue for a Scientific Retreat

Hirschberg Castle has long and varied history dating back to the 12th century. Situated close to Beilngries and high above the Altmühltal valley, it offers visitors a sweeping view of the beautiful landscape. This wonderful venue was perfectly suitable for a seminar, and more particularly the third get-together of the PhD students of the International Doctorate Program Photo-Electro Catalysis with their PIs.

Enticing Talks by Renowned Guest-Speakers

Within the context of the conference, two guest speakers were invited to present their research and answer all the questions by the students. Prof. Dr. Paolo Melchiorre from the University of Bologna started a presentation of some of his ground-breaking projects and ideas in the field of photo-organocatalysis. Furthermore, he also gave insights on his function as an Associate Editor at Chemical Science and animated a vivid discussion about the publication process of a scientific paper. Dr. Tobias Gärtner, the CEO and one of the co-founders of ESy-Labs located in Regensburg, was the second invited speaker of this convention. He presented this innovative company’s vision for more sustainabil-ity in organic synthesis by using electrochemistry.

Scientific presentations of the PhD students

Several of the PhD students presented the current progress of their projects, putting the accent on the collaboration among them, in a great example of the collaborative spirit the Doctoral Program. Thrilling science and positive energy offered an opportunity for the students from Regensburg and Munich to come together.

On the evening of the 4th of March, less formal discussions between the students, the PIs, and indus-trial guests took place in the traditional Schlosskeller (basement of the castle). The quiet and agreeable atmosphere along with the great food were perfect ingredients for a delightful get-together.
