GERMAN NATIONAL ACADEMIC FOUNDATION
(STUDIENSTIFTUNG DES DEUTSCHEN VOLKES)

The German National Academic Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes e.V.) is in charge of administering and organizing The Max Weber-Program. The German National Academic Foundation is the biggest German organization for the promotion of young talents. On October 1, 2005, the cooperation treaty between the State of Bavaria and the German National Academic Foundation came into effect.

According to the cooperation treaty, the State of Bavaria assigns two tasks to the German National Academic Foundation: first, administering and organizing the excellence program in accordance with and based on the Bavarian Elite Support Act (BayEFG); second, the process of selecting the students for the program. For the first time, the German National Academic Foundation is thus in charge of promoting young talents on the level of a federal state, i.e. within the Max Weber-Program of the State of Bavaria.

With more than 10,000 scholarship holders, the German National Academic Foundation is the biggest and at the same time the oldest German organization for the promotion of young talents. It is neutral in respect to politics, religion and ideology. The “Studienstiftung” promotes young talents in the fields of science, economy, public administration and the arts. Its support program is meant to convey and boost academic development, interdisciplinary dialogue, a cosmopolitan mindset and international experiences. The German National Academic Foundation is financed by the German federal government, the state governments, and the municipalities as well as by various trusts, companies and private donators. The “Studienstiftung” was founded in 1925 in Dresden, disbanded in 1934 and re-established as a registered association (e. V.) in 1948 in Cologne. Since then it has supported more than 50,000 highly gifted students and doctoral students.

On the whole, the “Studienstiftung” administers the Max Weber-Program independently of its duties in the nation-wide support program. However, there is cooperation as far as some of the courses are concerned (e.g. language courses and academic seminars). The selection process to identify the students for the Max Weber-Program of the State of Bavaria is carried out independently of the selection process of students for the “Studienstiftung”.
