Students at Bavarian universities of above-average performance are eligible for admission to the Max Weber-Program during their studies. Thus, students who have not taken their university entrance exams in Bavaria can also become part of the program. Every year there are 200 places available for university students. From 2012 to 2014 an additional number of 200 places have been allocated to students who graduated from Bavarian secondary schools in 2011.

In general, all applicants who meet the formal requirements are invited to a two-day selection seminar organised by the German National Academic Foundation. In case of exceedingly high numbers of applicants, the submitted written application papers will form the basis for a preliminary selection round. The selection seminars take place in various Bavarian cities on weekends from March until May. Successful applicants enter the program on 1 April. First degree students are eligible for admission to the Max Weber-Program as well as students in a consecutive masters’ degree course.

Who is the Max Weber-Program looking for?

Applicants are expected to excel in academics and to show commitment to various causes; they are to show creative intelligence, communicative and social competence and the willingness to accept responsibility.

These criteria are the guidelines along which the candidates are examined in a selection seminar. This seminar consists of two one-on-one interviews (a general interview and one with an expert in the candidates’ field of study) and of several group meetings where members of the group take turns giving short presentations and chairing the discussions.

Formal prerequisites for the application

  • Enrolment at a Bavarian university*
  • Citizenship of a member state of the European Union (exceptions possible)
  • Students must not be older than 23 when entering the Max Weber-Program (exceptions possible)

* When entering the Max Weber-Program, students are required to study for at least another two semesters until the completion of their respective study course (according to the course’s standard period of study)

Next application deadline

Until November 1, 2019 we accept both direct applications and recommendations (e.g. by professors) for the selection seminars in the summer term 2020.
