Biology meets physics

The Biological Physics Retreat, regularly organized by the Elite Graduate Program “Biological Physics”, serves as a platform for students in the programme to present their research. Highlights of the event included lectures by Prof. Dr. Holger Kress on the interactions of microplastics within cells and a career talk by Dr. Johannes König on the biological safety of medical devices.

Interdisciplinary exchange at the highest level

Outstanding research often emerges in interdisciplinary fields. Particularly at the intersection of biology and physics, our modern world presents numerous challenging questions—ranging from the effects of microplastics on living cells, cancer research, to the safety of medical devices. However, the initial challenge for young researchers is first to develop an understanding of the respective other discipline and to establish a shared language. To this end, students and faculty of Elite Graduate Program “Biological Physics” retreated to the nearby Franconian Switzerland on June 16th and 17th, 2025. The days were filled with outstanding student presentations on topics such as molecular switches, the behavior of red blood cells, protein design using artificial intelligence, and processes within living cells. Throughout the event, numerous opportunities for discussion arose. As key contributors, students also took on important organizational responsibilities, such as moderating sessions themselves. 

Evening lectures and social interaction

The evening of the first day featured two special lectures: Prof. Dr. Holger Kress spoke about the interactions of microplastic particles within living cells and their effects, for example, on the immune systems of organisms. After dinner, Dr. Johannes König, an alumnus of the University of Bayreuth and currently working at TÜV SÜD, delivered a career talk on the biological safety of medical devices, followed by an open discussion. The remainder of the evening in the accommodation’s dining area provided ample opportunity for social interaction, allowing participants to build new connections, lay the groundwork for future collaborations, and strengthen existing relationships. The event was a complete success for both students and faculty members.
