"The Survivor’s Guide to Stable Isotope Ecology II" - Science School in Sicily, Italy

Erika Gress, a Global Change Ecology M.Sc Student participated from April 14 to 21, 2018 at the Science School entitled ‘The Survivor’s Guide to Stable Isotope Ecology II’ at the Sicily Center for International Education (SCIE) in Italy.

The course reviewed the fundamentals of a particular ecological tool called "stable isotopes" which is a powerful and ubiquitous tool in modern ecology. Stable isotopes can be applied to investigate food-webs, species interactions and migration patterns in marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems.

The course instructors included international leading experts who taught the participants about the application of stable isotopes - such as carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen and sulphur - and analysis of stable isotope data in manifold ecosystem types. The course programme included a combination of morning lectures, one afternoon of field activities and data analysis (using the statistical open software R) during all evenings.

As a Graduate student participating in this course, Erika Gress would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a good insight into the application of stable isotopes and learn from a good variety of world experts.
