Internship report at the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN)

From 13 March to 21 April 2017 Claudia Kurzböck did a 6-week mandatory internship at the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation in Bonn, Germany where she stayed in the department of Site Protection/Large-Scale Conservation Areas.

The head of this department, Dr. Volker Scherfose supervised her work. On average Claudia Kurzböck worked 39 hours per week, with a flexible work schedule between 9.00 and 17.30.

Her main tasks were to conduct literature research and to write articles for the BfN homepage about landscape protection areas, in German and English and for the rubric new publications in the BfN magazine "Natur und Landschaft". She also analyzed Natural Parks in Germany with regard to the reasonability of their area/borders and revised drafts for BfN publications.

Beside Claudia Kurzböck's daily tasks, she organized meetings with other departments of the BfN, where the colleagues introduced their fields of activity to the BfN interns. In addition, all interns got an introduction into the BfN facilities such as the library and the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora) exhibition. Furthermore, she attended meetings with staff from the ministry and teams of our department.

All in all, Claudia Kurzböck was able to get a good insight into the duties and responsibilities of a German nature conservation agency. The staff seemed to be very committed and motivated and the working atmosphere was comfortable.
