Conference Report: EcoSummit conference

The 5th international EcoSummit conference on ecological sustainability and engineering change took place in Montpellier (France) from the 29th of August until the 1st of September 2016. The conference was hosted by the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and the French Institute for Researchers for the Development (IRD) and managed by Elsevier.

The EcoSummit conference is one of the biggest scientific conferences in ecological and environmental sciences worldwide. Over 1,500 people attended in around 100 sessions and side events with over 1,300 talks. A huge variety of topics from all fields within ecology was covered. It was a good first experience to get familiar with the current state of the art in ecological sciences and get to know other scientists. I also participated in a side event for young scientists with advice from renowned researchers, e.g. various editors of peer-reviewed journals. After the conference several field trips to the surrounding ecosystems were offered on the 2th of September. I decided to participate in the trip to the regional natural Parc Grands Causses which is recognized by the UNESCO as world heritage site for its ‘cultural landscapes’.

In my opinion going to a scientific conference is especially relevant if you want to choose a scientific career, if you are interested in specific topics or talks and want to get in touch with certain people, otherwise you will not take away so much as most talks are very specialized.
