BIGSS is a newly founded Elite Graduate School, with the topic "Lead Structures of Cell Function". BIGSS is admitting students with strong backgrounds in natural sciences, medicine, or bioengineering. Those with biological backgrounds learn the requisite chemical skills, and those with chemical backgrounds acquire a deep understanding of how biological systems work.

The objective of the Elite Graduate School Program is to prepare investigators with diverse background for independent research careers in which the concepts and methods of biochemistry, chemistry, and physics are applied to biological problems. This objective is met through individually designed programs involving courses in structural biology, chemistry, biology and in related fields, rotations in different labs, proposal preparation, improving of soft skills, independent research, and thesis writing.

The Member Departments of BIGSS cover methods and projects along the path of drug development including: target characterization in gene transcription and signal transduction; proteins in viral and bacterial pathogens; proteins in cancer cells; X-ray crystallography; NMR; bioinformatics; development of animal models; pre-clinical research.
