The international Ph.D. program is jointly organized by about all Bavarian economic departments. Research focuses on 'incentives', especially the application of incentive contracts to institutions and markets. Some BGPE researchers develop analytical and empirical methods of incentive economics others apply these findings to specific institutions and markets. The combination of theoretical, empirical, and practical competence is a distinguishing feature of the program.

The universities involved jointly organize research workshops and doctoral training. Renowned lecturers from abroad contribute to the workshops and courses. All BGPE doctoral students spend one semester abroad and do a 2- or 3-month non-academic internship. To this end, the individual contacts of the researchers involved are combined offering students a far-reaching network. A knowledge transfer beyond the students supported in the program is ensured, since the research workshops and doctoral trainings are open to all doctoral students in economics at the participating universities.
