This international graduate program is devoted to problems of identification, optimization and control of systems and processes in the context of complex engineering, medical and economical applications. The scope of the research to be conducted ranges from mathematical modelling, analysis, the development of algorithms and their numerical implementation on high performance computers.

Identification, optimization and control play a crucial role in modern technologies. Consequently, the focus on this topic is an essential feature of this graduate program. The concentration of internationally well-known specialists in this field of research within the region of northern Bavaria provides an ideal environment for cutting edge research. The goal of the projected research is the transition from model-based numerical simulation to model-based design and optimal control. To this end very recent mathematical achievements both in optimization, control and numerical mathematics have to be combined in structure exploiting algorithms.

The emphasis is on 'Optimization and control with partial differential equations', 'Optimization of very large scale systems' and 'Nonlinear optimal control'. During the second phase of this graduate program, joint research with engineers is enhanced in order to fully exploit the potential established in the first phase. New concepts of learning and teaching foster the success of this interdisciplinary research.
