The first REASON videos

It is often the case that the latest research results quickly find their way into research journals but fail to inform practitioners about their practical meaning. In this context, the communication of research findings is a central key qualification that is actively promoted within our program.

Linking theory and practice via multimedia content

The dissemination of research findings is an integral part of the research process, and the ability to communicate research findings to different audiences is an essential qualification for researchers. A central goal of the International Doctorate Program „REASON” is to link theoretically driven research findings with practice by communicating the results of research in a way that is clear and accessible to a number of audiences. REASON places great importance on practice transfer. We therefore aim to address the question of how theory-driven empirical work on scientific reasoning and argumentation can be implemented and transferred to practice, as well as how the results can be communicated to a broader public.

With this purpose in mind, the first REASON practice transfer videos were published in 2018. Five REASON alumni from the first REASON Cohort - Dr. Andras Csanadi, Dr. Carlos Mauricio Castaño Diaz, Dr. Maria Fysaraki, Dr. Jannina Klemm und Dr. Ansgar Opitz – presented the central results from their empirical studies. The video series provides a snapshot of the research world of REASON and a glimpse into modern research environments comprised of international and interdisciplinary teams.

The initiative is managed in the current cohort by our doctoral candidate April Moeller Bachhuber. In October 2018 she organized a workshop on the topic „Video abstracts for peer-reviewed publications“. The tutor was Janine Reutemann, an expert in media design with considerable expertise in the communication of research results. In this one day workshop, the REASON candidates learned about important steps in planning, structuring and designing a video.
